Welcome to the Meeting of the Management Board of the European Simmental Cattle Federation. Poland is one of the countries where the Simmental cattle forms only a small part of the cattle population; however, the cattle is widely used for commercial crossing in beef cattle production. Pure breed cows in Poland represent approximately 1% of the national population. Poland has a fairly long history of breeding the Simmental cattle. The cattle arrived to Poland from Central Europe (Switzerland, Austria) in the end of 18th century to barns kept by land owners, predominately on the easter outskirts of Poland. Military actions during wars caused a significant reduction of the breeding in 1950ties. The breed re-gained its popularity in late 1970ties in small private farms in eastern Poland. In Poland, the Simmental breed is maintained both for good milk and excellent meat production. It is predominantely fed with bulky feeds. On request of Polish breeders, the Simmental cattle is kept in the purity of the meed by using bulls from European breeding in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for improving bulls. At the current stage of breeding work, the improvement program covers inclusion of functional features to the breeding value as well as a preparation of a collective index listing features of milk and meat production and functional features. During your stay in Poland, you will have the opportunity to visit institutions involved in breeding and implementation of a breeding programme for the Simmental cattle. Generally, these institutions are located in the center of breeding the Simmental catlle in the southern and south-eastern Poland. In terms of landscape, the area is very pictoresque but its climate is rather severe. As the natural conditions in the region are favourable for the Simmental cattle, the region has become the source of the most valuable breeding material. During you stay in Poland, you will have the opportunity to visit the National Research Institute of Animal Production in Krakow, involved in improving and assessing the breeding value of the Simmental cattle and the Małopolskie Center of Biotechnology in Krasne which keeps Simmental bulls and is mainly involved in reproduction of the Simmental cattle. At the end of the visit, you can meet cattle farmers and see the elite of the Simmental cattle at the National Exposition of the Simmental Cattle in Rudawka Rymanowska, organised by the Polish Simmental Cattle Breeders Association. 27 August 2008 Wednesday Kraków		Arrival of Council Meeting participants. Check-in and accommodation at the Orbis Cracovia hotel Kraków. Orbis Travel Bureau deals with registration and fees. Dinner at the Orbis Cracovia hotel for those participants who send the registration form.
28 August 2008 Thursday Kraków, Wieliczka	9.30 - 14.00	Board Meeting a.o. at the National Research Institute of Animal Production in the Balice Palace.
	9.30 - 14.00	City tour of Kraków for accompanying persons.
	14.30 - 16.00	Lunch at the Chłopskie Jadło restaurant.
	16.00 - 17.30	Visit the Wawel Hill with the Royal Cathedral. Bus transfer to Wieliczka.
	18.00 - 20.00	Visit the Salt Mine.
	20.00 - 22.00	Dinner at the "Halit" restaurant in Wieliczka. Bus transfer to Kraków.
29 August 2008 Friday Krasne, Łańcut, Sanok	8.00	Bus departure to Krasne - Łańcut - Sanok (2 days tour). Route: Kraków - Krasne - Łańcut - Sanok (accommodation) - Rudawka Rymanowska - Kraków .
	12.00 - 14.00	Visit to the Małopolska Biotechnology Centre in Krasne near Rzeszów, which implements the National Simmental Bull Evaluation and Selection Programme. Show of Simmental bulls.
	14.30 - 15.30	Lunch at the restaurant "Zamkowa" in Łańcut.
	15.30 - 16.30	Visit the Palace in Łańcut, seat of the Lubomirski and Potocki
	20.00	Banquet at the "Bona" hotel in Sanok. Meeting of breeders.
30 August 2008 Saturday Odrzechowa, Rudawka Rymanowska	9.00	Bus departure to Odrzechowa and Rudawka Rymanowska.
	9.30 - 10.30	Visit to the Odrzechowa Experimental Station of the National Research Institute of Animal Production, which has the largest herd of Simmental cattle in Poland.
	11.00	Visit the IVth National Simmental Exhibition in Rudawka Rymanowska. Lunch will be provided by the Organizers.
	17.00	Bus transfer to Kraków.
